Project Proposal: Eco-Hybrid Pellet System: Agarwood & Rubber

Valorization of Agarwood and Rubberwood Industrial Waste for Sustainable Solid Biofuel Production

1. Executive Summary

This project aims to establish a circular-economy production system that converts underutilized industrial byproducts—Agarwood Waste (ACW) and Rubber Wood Sawdust (RWS)—into high-performance, commercial-grade biomass pellets. By utilizing a specific hybrid ratio, the project addresses the waste management challenges of the perfume and furniture industries while providing a carbon-neutral alternative to coal.

2. Project Objectives

  • Waste Valorization: Divert ACW (post-oil distillation) and RWS from landfills into a value-added energy product.

  • Quality Standardization: Produce solid biofuels that meet EN plus B (2014) and Korean Grade 4 international standards.

  • Economic Empowerment: Create a secondary revenue stream for the 200,000+ agarwood farmers and rubber wood processors.

  • Carbon Reduction: Lower industrial greenhouse gas emissions by replacing fossil fuels with renewable biomass.

3. Technical Methodology

The production system uses a binderless mechanical densification process:

  • Hybrid Blending: A rigorous 1:3 mixing ratio (1 part ACW to 3 parts RWS). This specific ratio is critical to achieving the desired low-ash and high-calorific output.

  • Processing Workflow:

    1. Size Reduction: Grinding raw materials to particles < 1 mm.

    2. Moisture Control: Drying the blend to an optimal 10–12% moisture content.

    3. Pelletization: High-pressure compression using a 7.5 kW pelletizing device (yielding 100–150 kg/h).

    4. Cooling & Screening: Stabilizing the pellets and removing dust for clean combustion.

4. Key Performance Targets

The hybrid fuel is designed to outperform pure rubberwood pellets:

  • Heating Value: ~4,536 kcal/kg (Superior energy density).

  • Ash Content: ~1.70% (Reduces boiler maintenance and slagging).

  • Moisture Content: ~4.50% (Ensures efficient ignition and low smoke).

5. Environmental & Social Impact

  • Circular Economy: The project supports the Bio-Circular-Green (BCG) model, utilizing the 40–50% waste generated in the rubberwood industry.

  • Pollution Control: Significant reduction in SOx and NOx emissions compared to traditional coal.

  • Local Livelihoods: In regions like Tripura, Assam, Nagaland, South India where agarwood trade is vital, this adds value to the "spent wood" that is currently discarded.

6. Market Potential

With global biomass demand rising, these pellets are ideal for:

  1. Industrial Boilers: In textile, food processing, and chemical plants.

  2. Power Plants: As a 5–7% co-firing agent with coal to meet renewable mandates.

  3. Byproduct Sales: The resulting biomass ash (APBA) can be sold as a reinforcing filler for natural rubber foam manufacturing.
